Connecting SimaPro with other software

Using the two way COM interface in the SimaPro Developer version, you can link SimaPro to other software. This opens the possibility to use LCA results in other tools, or to receive useful data in SimaPro.

To demonstrate the COM feature a .NET desktop and a Java web application were developed by our partner GreenDeltaTC. You can download these open source connectors from Sourceforge.

Getting results from SimaPro

Using the COM interface, you can ask SimaPro to calculate any kind of result and show it in another software tool. A typical result you may want to show is an Eco-indicator score, or the characterized results for greenhouse gases. In principle, you can show all results that you can also calculate in SimaPro.

Typical applications are in:

  • CAD/CAM systems, to give a product designer or architect feedback on design choices.
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, to show a regular update of the impact of material, energy and transport flows in the company.
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, to give insight in the environmental issues in PLM.

Getting data from other systems

The COM interface can also be used to feed data from other systems into SimaPro. The most typical use will be to obtain Bill of Materials (BOM) in SimaPro from an ERP or PLM system. This data is used as a starting block for modelling a product's life cycle.

This is especially useful for companies that have a large and quickly changing range of products, and for example need to create Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for each of their products.

As alternative for the COM interface you can also use the simpler Excel/database link method.

Using the COM interface on your website

With the COM interface and a SimaPro multi user version1, you can build tools to communicate your results throughout your intranet and extranet sites.

The other way round, you can use the COM interface to create questionnaires that feed the results directly into your SimaPro database.

Creating a COM interface

To create a COM interface you need:

  • A SimaPro Developer license, and good knowledge of how the modelling in SimaPro works.
  • A COM feature on the software you are linking with. You should also have sufficient rights to access (or edit) the data, and understand how the data structure in this tool.
  • Knowledge of common programming languages such as C++ or Visual Basic to write the interface.
