Weighting

To create a weighting set, 365 questionnaires were sent out to a Swiss LCA interest group. 82 were returned; 45 of these could be used as basis for the weighting factors [Mettier 1999]. The panel members were asked to rank and weigh the three damage categories.

The average weights are:

The results are shown in the triangle below [Hofstetter et. Al 1999]. Each point represents a combination of weights from a single panel member. The cross in the middle represents ten panel members, who gave equal weights. The red dot represents the average rounded weighting. The result is in accordance to the ranking result.

Weighting per perspective

Next to the questions on rank and weight, a number of questions regarding attitude and perspective on society were added. On the basis of this information some of the respondents could be distinguished as using a perspective that fits within one of the three archetypes used in this project. By separating the answers of these (in total only 29 panelists) it is possible to get weighting factors per perspective The figures and table below show the result of this procedure (click on each figure to enlarge).

Differences between the perspectives and their statistical significance. a) Probability that there is no difference between Egalitarians and Individualists. Similarly for b) and c)

As there are only 5 weights in the Hierarchist perspective, we do not use this result. As default we combine the Hierarchist perspective with the average weighting.
